ASP-1 Da Nang Viet Nam |
September 1965 - ???? 1974 |
Hello and a warm welcome to the site I’ve made commemorating ASP-1 Da Nang, Viet Nam and it’s inhabitants. I was a very young marine when I reported for duty at the 3rd Marine Division, Force Logistic Support Group Alpha (FLSG-A ), as a 2311 Ammo Tech. Fancy name for a hazardous duty, heavy lift, stock clerk. When I was shipped to Okinawa from Camp Pendleton in late March of 1966 I was just shy of my 18th birthday. Due to a rule that a person must be older than 18 to serve in Viet Nam, I had to spend a few weeks in Okinawa. I did not complain! On April 12, 1966, my 18th, the Marine Corps gave me my shipping orders to Viet Nam. On April 19th I embarked on an old LST, the Tom Greene County, and arrived in Da Nang on the 25th of April. After Receiving my web gear, M-14 rifle, and accessories I was trucked from FLSG-A across route 1, through Dogpatch , and finally up into ASP-1. The following pages, (links are in blue on the right), will provide you with photos and commentary for the time I spent and the jobs I did while attached to the ammo dump. |
Today’s date is July 27, 2009. I've just finished adding the Home Movies Joe Capozzo made back in 1966 - 1967. There are six in total, I have them spread out the site in their respective time frame. The movies are available in .avi and .wmv formats. The .wmv versions are much smaller with shorter download times for those of you with slow connections. All the movies are with sound. Be advised that this is only the beginning of this project. I am hoping to attract others that came before and after me at ASP-1 and perhaps give you a better all around history of the ammo dump. I’m living in Holland and can be reached either by the email link , (mike<nospam>@goingback.org , remove <nospam> from the address), or regular mail at : Michael Dybus Eerste Lieven De Keylaan 68 5622 GE Eindhoven The Netherlands I've been back from Da Nang since the 26th of May. While riding a motor scooter around Da Nang I was hit in the eyes with a blast of dirt and other unknown debris. I thought my glasses were protection enough, in retrospect I should have been wearing goggles. As a result I had a nasty eye infection that I just last weekend(June 20)with the help of antibiotics managed to clear up. I spoke too soon with the cleared up part! My eye infection came back around the 8th of July, I was put back on antibiotics and will be for another two weeks. I hope it gets gone this time. If any of you are planning to go back to Viet Nam or even thinking of it I can heartily recommend without reservation a former 1/3 Marine, Bill Ervin. Bill and his woman run affordable tours custom designed for your personal needs from Ho Chi Minh City and the Delta all the way north to Hanoi. He can be reached at: http://www.billinnam.com I do hope you enjoy my project. Best Regards Semper Fi! Mike Dybus |
